10 Things We Learned From 10 Things I Hate About You
10 Things I Hate About You is one of the movies which has stood the test of time and has endless quotable lines. It didn’t just teach us about Shakepeare (it was an adapation of Taming Of The Shrew for those who don’t have the 411) but we also learnt a hell of a lot about life. It wasn’t just about not judging a book by its cover, or getting the girl/boy; it’s also been hailed as one of the best portrayals of modern-day feminism.
Here’s some of the things we learnt from 10 Things I Hate About You. Told with screencaps, naturally:
10. Standing up for yourself is essential
If Cameron had stepped back and let Bianca take advantage of him, he would never have landed the girl in the end. It was showing his strength (well, and tying in a compliment) that helped Bianca see Cameron in a new light.
9. It’s ok to call out people when they are being d-bags
Kat Stratford is the ultimate teen feminist: she has strong ideals and she’s not afraid to callout when people try to push their weight around without good reason.
8. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Hey, not everyone thought Patrick was pretty, but this just proves that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
7. Some lessons are learned the hard way
Sometimes, the best approach is to save your breath. You can tell someone how they should act or think till you’re black and blue, but the only way to learn that lesson is to experience it for yourself. Both Kat and Bianca had their moments where they learned their lessons the hard way.
6. Pull the right moves
Ok, Cameron might not think he’s a pretty boy, but Patrick proves you don’t need to be pretty to win the girls over – just pull the right moves.
5. Know whose dreams you are working towards
Kat had a very clear sense of what was expected of her: and went out of her way to reject it. She was determined to set her own destiny.
4. Don’t always believe rumours
Patrick had a lot of wild rumour circulating about him. Our favorite would be the time he ate a wild duck (everything but the head and feet) – but we know now that some rumours are just that – rumours.
3. Perspective can tell a whole other story
Perspective was never more glaringly portrayed in 10 Things I Hate About You than by the cast of adults littered throughout the film.
One of our favourites would have to be Mr Stratford:
And who could forget Mr Morgan, throwing truthbombs all over the classroom:
2. Some people deserve what’s coming to them
Yes, Joey, you d-bag, you deserved everything coming to you.
1. When you’ve got a good thing, hold on to it
When you know you’ve found someone pretty darn special, don’t let them go. Karaoke is the answer.
Bonus tip: Have a back up plan
Refer to point #1. Have a backup plan to you can hold onto that good thing.
